What do Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman, and George Brett have in common? They all own works by Kansas City-based artist Tom Corbin.
Sculptor Tom Corbin may be best known for his elegant, elongated figures and bronze furniture, but as his career builds momentum, the artist has incorporated new themes into his work. In his exhibition Tom Corbin/New Work at The Box Gallery, the viewer is invited to explore Corbin’s creativity through his sculpture, furniture, and rarely exhibited paintings.
“New ideas and directions are the life blood of all artists. In my case, the inspiration for this new work seems like a natural progression in my career – an amalgam of life experiences and influences,” stated Tom Corbin.
Tom Corbin/New Work showcases Corbin’s successful career and its impact on Kansas City. His work is represented in over 22 galleries and showrooms nationally and internationally, making him an important ambassador of Kansas City.
About Tom Corbin
Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1954, Tom’s early interest in art was inspired by his mother who worked as an art teacher, but his career life started in business as an advertising executive. In 1986 Tom left the corporate world for a life as a full time sculptor. In 2009, Tom Corbin moved his art studio into the “Firehouse” on Southwest Boulevard where the second floor serves as office and gallery space.
For the past two decades many of Corbin’s work employed solitary human figures that encourage quiet introspection or joyful celebration, but new themes have emerged that bring into play elements of the environmental, symbolic and historical. At times, unexpected elements are found in works like “Girl on Swing” and “Girl with Lawnmower,” which trade traditional formal beauty for everyday moments combined with a gentle humor.
Today his work can be found in 22 showrooms and art galleries internationally– from Los Angeles to Australia. In addition to a list of celebrity private collections & public collections, his work has found its way into the sets of some major motion pictures, including True Lies and Transformers. Corbin has also completed a number of large public art commissions, including over 20 installations in the Kansas City metro area. You can find his outdoor sculptures at the Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden, the Firefighter’s Memorial (near Penn Valley Park) and the Children’s Fountain in the Northland.
